Me? Ballet? At my age?

Me?  Ballet? followed by a laugh is a common reaction I hear when talking to people I meet about Silver Swans ballet classes in Suffolk.  But if you think that ballet is not for you then think again.

Silver Swans is a fun fitness ballet class specially designed by the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) for older learners that will improve your mobility, posture, co-ordination and energy levels.  You can be experienced, have dabbled a bit over the years or be a total novice and you’ll fit right in.

I’m not surprised people are often put off by the idea of it.  I know ballet has a bit of image problem.  History tells us that ballet is for young, skinny, white, posh people.  And taught by strict and serious teachers.  But the RAD’s Silver Swans program is part of a dance revolution proving that dance and especially ballet is, and always should be, fun and accessible for everyone.

So, let’s address three of the most common concerns head on.  Here are the most common reasons I hear for not trying a Silver Swans ballet class in Suffolk.

I’m not thin/young enough

At my Silver Swans classes in Suffolk, my participants range enormously in age, height, weight and mobility.  The classes are specially designed for older learners allowing you to work at your own level so you won’t stand out if you find something difficult, you’ll just do it at a level that is comfortable for you.  The classes are judgement-free and welcoming to all.

Ballet is too serious?

At my Silver Swan classes in Suffolk, I never get through a class without some giggling, the odd bit of heckling, and the occasional bit of singing along to the music.  I find that my Silver Swans are often more boisterous than the children I teach!   It’s precisely the inclusive atmosphere I want as learning in a fun and inclusive way is at the heart of what my dance school LTS School of Dance is all about.

Me, in a leotard!?!

At my Silver Swan classes in Suffolk, nobody wears a leotard, or for that matter, a bun in their hair.  Though some have expressed disappointment that I don’t provide them with tutus!  It’s comfortable clothes all the way!

So, if you’re in two minds about trying Silver Swans, I hope I have managed to convince you to at least give it a try.  It’s pay as you go so you’ve nothing to lose.  And fun, friendship and improved physical and mental health are just some of the things that you could stand to gain.
